New book urges Kenyans to embrace Gen Z in leadership, challenges outdated views

Mburu's work explores the evolving dynamics between generations, particularly Millennials and Gen Z, and makes a compelling case for bridging the gap through mentorship, mutual understanding, and shared leadership.

A newly launched book in Nairobi, From Millennials to Gen Z: Leadership Insights for Africa by Dr Lucas Mburu, is urging Kenyans to rethink the inclusion of Gen Z in leadership amid their growing influence in shaping the country’s political and social landscape.

Mburu believes there should be an immediate rethinking of leadership change in the country.

"I have written how Gen Z are capable of positively impacting the leadership of this country and beyond if they are included in leadership and all facets of societal realms," said Mburu.

He argues that the country needs to shift its mindset and start tapping into the energy, ideas, and urgency of young people instead of sidelining them.

"Our potential as a country can grow exponentially if we were to tap into the ideas and suggestions of Gen Z in growing the country rather than viewing them negatively," he said.

Mburu's work explores the evolving dynamics between generations, particularly Millennials and Gen Z, and makes a compelling case for bridging the gap through mentorship, mutual understanding, and shared leadership.

'Part of the solution'

Drawing from his PhD research, Mburu said the book is his way of being "part of the solution" to a growing concern across Africa: the alienation and underestimation of the youth.

"Gen Z is not just the future, they are the present. They're bold, assertive, and unafraid to demand change. They feel overlooked and unheard, and this book aims to open up space for their voices," he said during the launch.

Mburu challenged both public institutions and individuals to listen more and dismiss less.

"My message to Gen Z is simple: don't retreat. Keep raising your voice. This is your time, your future. No conversation about you should happen without you," he emphasised.

Digital revolution and AI

The book spans a broad spectrum, from spiritual insights on generational shifts to workplace dynamics, while spotlighting the digital revolution, particularly social media and AI, as key forces shaping the identity and leadership style of today's youth.

"Gen Z operates in a world that is fast, digital, and hyper-connected. Whether it's AI or TikTok, these tools are redefining influence and change. We can't respond to that with analogue thinking," Mburu noted.

On the choice of title, he explained it represents both a handover and a wake-up call.

"It ends with Gen Z because they are currently applying the most pressure. They are loud, visible, and shaping the national discourse. The magnifying glass on the cover is symbolic, we need to examine their role more closely, because although they're everywhere, many still don't 'see' them."

The book is now available on Nuria Kenya, an online bookstore offering fast and convenient delivery—another nod to the on-demand, digital-first lifestyle Gen Z epitomises.

Mburu also called on leaders, parents, and institutions to take responsibility: "Let's stop pointing fingers and start offering guidance. That's how we co-create a better future."
